Designing a “system” and a story about a living room

Light instruments, a system exploration for PHILIPS

What is… a systems-designer?

At PHILIPS Lighting, my role was a product & systems designer. But what does that mean: “systems designer”?

Due to our smart lighting platform HUE, we must look beyond the “product”, into the “system” (eco-system if you want) to nurture and develop this beyond PHILIPS into a true partner based eco-system.

Orchestrating that system…

Building an ecosystem means looking a few years ahead, together with partners and together with experts, users, extreme-users,… to keep on developing and enriching both the experience as platform.

But as this platform can easily grow big and beyond, we explored multiple options to “orchestrate the experience” as to show partners how to keep the experience front and center, instead of everyone living in their own product-bubble.

A user-first portfolio alignment

A full user-experience-flow to map out daily wants/needs and delighters/detractors. This led to the own PHILIPS portfolio alignment with real user needs, and new development as building blocks to the partners.

Professional technology for consumers

A system-wide circadian rhythm (natural rhythm) or natural lighting to harmonize all lights and connected devices.

New and better understanding from the human-centric-lighting in the professional space can instantaneously be implemented in a system-wide rollout.

But are all lights in your home equal? And what if you have different rooms, different users and different activities…

How to orchestrate all of that?

Ambient lighting to extend your TV screen.
